A NOTE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
The long-term artistic vitality of Yale Rep has been most vividly defined by its commitment to new plays—well over 100 world, American, and regional premieres in our 42-year history. Over the past five seasons, you might have seen world premieres by Kama Ginkas (Rothschild's Fiddle), David Rabe (The Black Monk), August Wilson (Radio Golf), Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (The Mystery Plays), Marcus Gardley (dance of the holy ghosts), and Sarah Ruhl (The Clean House, a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize), among others. If you're a long-time attender, you may have seen Yale Rep productions of new works by other important writers, including Lee Blessing, Christopher Durang, Athol Fugard, Albert Innaurato, Richard Nelson, Suzan-Lori Parks, and Doug Wright.
In this tradition, it is my pleasure to introduce you to David Adjmi and the world premiere of his play, The Evildoers. David's unique voice and comic sensibility are matched by his daring and unswerving interest in the morality of contemporary relationships and culture. We're excited about the ambition of his work: it depends on the vitality of the actor and of language and on the particular imaginative opportunities of space and time that theatre offers.
Our commitment to The Evildoers is emblematic of our most important efforts at Yale Rep: supporting a playwright's process through a play's premiere and encouraging long-term relationships between writers and our theatre. We're pleased that David will be writing another play under commission from Yale, and you can expect to find remarkable playwrights here at Yale for years to come.
Indeed, The Evildoers is only the first of two world premieres this spring at Yale Rep; our season closes with Boleros for the Disenchanted, a new play by Obie winner and Academy Award nominee José Rivera, premiering in May. Without you, our adventurous audience, this work would not be the same, so thank you for your participation in Yale Rep's tradition of playing on new ground in the American theatre.
Sincerely,
James Bundy
